The Bottom Line
This beautiful tree book begins by preparing a native tree landscape in a great "Getting Started" section. A brief but meaty review on landscape management segues to a "Menu" of 96 common native American trees. The trees are individually reviewed with a wealth of information including range, seasonal and physiological descriptions. Each tree's habitat and associated assets and problems are discussed. I love the final comments which share some of the most interesting "facts" on each tree.
Pros
- Coffee-table beauty and excellent photos with no compromise on interesting and useful content.
- A refreshing guidebook to help when using "native" trees in your next major landscape project.
- Excellent relaxed-style "comments" in a comprehensive "Menu of Native Trees" section.
Cons
- "Tree Selection Guide" section gets a bit tedious and is fairly limited in useful information.
Description
- On Sycamore: "Among our native trees, sycamore is one of the simplest to grow."
- On Basswood: "...is a tenacious tree that can grow under adverse growing conditions."
- On Flowering Dogwood: "...the king of spring..."
